Briant Peterson

Rupert Bell Park Basketball Courts & Pavilion (Chris Paul)

Commissioner: City of Winston-Salem, NC
Awarded: April 2025
Installation: June 2026

The Winston-Salem Forsyth County Public Art Commission selected artist Brian Peterson to create a large-scale mural honoring local basketball legend, Chris Paul. The mural will be painted on the Rupert Bell Park Basketball Pavilion and Courts, and feature images of Paul and young children playing basketball. In 2025, a survey was shared with members of the community, giving them a chance to review artist proposals and vote on their selection. Community votes were overwhelmingly in support of Peterson and his design. Paid internships will also be offered to students from local universities, such as Winston-Salem State, as part of the project.

This project is being funded by the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative (CNI) Public Art Revitalization Program. While the CNI funds are primarily focused on affordable housing in east Winston-Salem, a small percentage was set aside for neighborhood beautification projects in the surrounding area.
